Four Unanswered Foils Cobbers

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/05/16)—Concordia gave up four unanswered goals and lost 4-1 at league-leading St. Thomas.

The Cobbers scored in the third minute of the first period and that proved to be the lone highlight of the night as the Tommies scored a single goal in the first, one in the second and two in the third to win the battle between two of the top 3 teams in the MIAC.

The loss drops Concordia into a tie for fourth place in the league standings. The Cobbers are now 10-9-1 overall and 8-5-0 in the MIAC. St. Thomas ends its three-game win streak and is now 14-4-1 in all games and 9-3-1 in league play. The Tommies lead the MIAC with 19 total points.

Kristin Drechsel staked Concordia to an early 1-0 lead when she netted her second goal of the season at the 2:47 mark. The unassisted goal was her second in as many games.

Unfortunately for the Cobbers that would be the end of their offensive output. St. Thomas tied the game at 6:53 of the first period and then took a 2-1 lead at the 7:02 mark of the second period.

Concordia's best period was the second when they put up nine shots. CC also had two power play opportunities in the middle frame but couldn't cash in.

St. Thomas scored its third straight goal at 5:53 of the third period and then added an empty net tally at 18:21.

Neither team was able to score on the power play. Concordia was 0-for-4 while the Tommies were held scoreless in their three attempts.

Concordia was outshot 35-23 in the game. Sophomore Tori Davis had a team-high five shots in the game.

Andrea Klug made 31 saves in goal for the Cobbers.

WHAT'S NEXT: The two teams will finish off the two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
