Double By Davis Not Enough

WINONA, Minn. (12/04/15)—Concordia gave up a goal in the second minute of the third period and one in the final minute of the final period against St. Mary's and dropped a 4-2 decision in Winona.

The two unanswered third-period goals ended the Cobbers' four-game conference winning streak.  Concordia has now lost two straight games and is 4-1-0 in MIAC play and 5-4-0 overall. St. Mary's wins for the third time in the last four games and is now 4-3-1 in all games and 3-1-1 in the conference.

The teams traded goals until the decisive third period when the Cardinals scored at 1:10 and then again at 19:33 to win the game.

St. Mary's got on the board at the back end of the opening period and then the Cobbers responded 1:44 later. SMU scored an even-strength goal at the 14:04 mark and then sophomore Tori Davis scored the first of her two goals in the game at 15:48.

Davis' even-strength tally was her third of the season. Kayla Nack had the assist on the game-tying goal.

Unfortunately for CC they weren't able to take the tie score into the first intermission. St. Mary's netted their second go-ahead goal at 18:37 on the power play.

Concordia would remain down by a goal until the eighth minute of the second frame. Davis struck again as the Cobbers countered the Cardinals' power play strike with one of their own.

Davis tied the game at the 7:07 mark with an assist going to senior defenseman Cassey Petrich.

Concordia outshot the Cardinals 7-4 in the second period and the teams would skate into the final frame deadlocked on the scoreboard at 2-2 and tied on the scoresheet with 13 shots each.

The ties were broken at 1:10 of the third period when St. Mary's scored on their first shot of the period.

The Cobbers only put up five shots in the final period and did not have a power play attempt in the final 20 minutes of play.

The Cardinals outshot CC 25-18 in the game. Junior Amber Schaack had a team-high four shots on goal and continues to lead the Cobbers with 47 shots for the year. Cobber goalie Andrea Klug made 16 saves and lost for the first time in her last six starts. She is now 5-2-0 on the year.

TORRID TORI
The two-goal outburst by sophomore Tori Davis marked the first time in her collegiate career that she has scored more than one goal in a game. Davis has three goals in the last three games after having only one in the team's first six games of the year.

PENALTY KILL STREAK KAPUT
In addition to their conference win streak coming to an end, the Cobbers also had their penalty streak go kaput. Heading into Friday's game Concordia hadn't allowed a power play goal in six contests. CC had successfully killed off 24 power plays but then allowed a PP goal on the very first man-advantage situation of the game in the opening period vs. SMU

OFFENSIVE MINDED DEFENSEMAN
Senior defenseman Cassey Petrich has recorded at least one point in three straight games. She had an assist on the second goal against SMU and now has two goals and three assists for five points for the year. She is now third in the MIAC in scoring by a defenseman.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Concordia will look to gain a split in the two-game series when they square off against St. Mary's on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at the St. Mary's Ice Arena.
