A Chilly Northern Three-Goal Streak Leads To Loss

HIBBING, Minn. (1/11/13)—Concordia gave up three straight goals – one in each of the first, second and third periods – and wound up losing to St. Olaf 5-2 in a non-conference game in Hibbing on Friday. The Cobbers opened the scoring but then watched the Oles score five of the next six goals and lost for the third straight time.

Breann Julius got the Cobbers on the board first when she scored a power play goal at the 11:11 mark of the first period. Maddy Gendreau and Ali Nelson were credited with Julius' team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Less than three minutes the game would turn in the Oles' favor. St. Olaf (7-4-2) would score the first of their three straight goals with 8:29 on the clock in the first frame. The Oles would then add a single tally in the second and one less than one minute into the third period before Concordia picked up their second goal of the game.

Concordia (4-5-3) got to within one at 3-2 when Kelsey Vandegrift netted her very first goal of the season. The game would stay with a one-goal margin until the final 1:12 of the third period. That is when St. Olaf would add a pair of empty-net scores to push the game out of reach and push the final score line to 5-2.

The Cobbers held a 37-30 advantage in shots on goal. CC goalie Becca Hendrickson made 25 saves and lost for the first time this year. St. Olaf split the goaltending duties. Ali McKeaver played the first 29 minutes and stopped 13 shots to earn the win while Sam Ubl finished off the final 31 minutes and made 22 saves.

Concordia will now return to MIAC action when they play at St. Ben's in a two-game series on Jan. 18-19.
