Taffe's Two Points Nets Split

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/04/12)-- Abby Taffe had an assist on the first goal for Concordia and then scored the game-winning goal at the start of the third period in the Cobbers' 2-1 win over St. Kate's on Saturday. Concordia outshot the Wildcats 29-13 but needed Taffe's third-period heroics to end a three-game winless slide.

The win is the 10th of the season for Concordia and marks the fifth straight season they have posted a double-digit win total. CC is now 10-4-3 overall and 6-3-3 in the MIAC. The Cobbers are currently in second place in the league standings with three conference series remaining in the regular season. St. Kate's drops to 8-8-2 in all games and 4-6-2 in league play.

Concordia came out in the opening period and played as though they were content on putting Friday's loss behind them. The Cobbers wound up outshooting St. Kate's 7-2 in the first frame and played most of the 20 minutes in the Wildcats' end. Katelyn Dold scored the first goal of the game for Concordia when she netted her ninth goal of the year at the 17:05 mark. Taffe fed Dold the puck on the wing and then Dold skated in front and flipped the puck past Wildcat goalie Samantha Geissler. The Cobbers were unable to tack on a second goal that might have put them out front for the entire game. St. Kate's started to turn the momentum in the second when their forecheck started to bottle CC up in their defensive end of the rink. The Wildcats' persistence paid off at 13:53 of the middle frame when Nicki Mosbeck knocked home a rebound goal to tie the game at 1-1.

Concordia picked up the game-winning goal in the sixth minute of the final period. Taffe was in the right place at the right time when she fired home the game winner at 5:15 of the third from just outside the crease. Allie Bondy recorded the only assist on the goal. For Taffe it was her 13th goal and team-leading 24th point of the year.

The Cobbers outshot St. Kate's in all three periods. After putting up five more shots in the first, CC held a slim 9-7 edge in the second and then piled on a 13-4 advantage in the final period.

Concordia freshman goalie Rebecca Hendrickson made 12 saves to earn her second win of the season. She is now 2-0-0 on the year. Geissler stopped 27 shots in the loss for St. Kate's.

Neither team was able to score on the power play. Concordia went scoreless in their three power play attempts while SCU was 0-for-4 on special teams.

Concordia will host their final home series of the regular season next weekend when the square off against Hamline on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11. Both games will be held at the Moorhead Youth Rink.
