Julius Nets Two In Overtime Tie With No.4 Gustavus

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/28/12)—Breann Julius scored a pair of goals and No.9-ranked Concordia went on to tie No.4-ranked Gustavus 3-3 in overtime on Saturday. The Cobbers had a two-goal lead at 3-1 with 12:29 to play but then the Gusties scored two goals in a span of :11 to tie the game and force overtime.

The tie marks only the third non-loss for the Cobbers against the Gusties in the 28-game series between the two teams.  It also pushes Concordia' season record to 9-3-3 overall and 5-2-3 in the MIAC. CC remains in second place in the conference standings. The tie ends Gustavus ' league winning streak. GAC is now 9-0-1 in the MIAC and 14-0-2 in all games.

Julius opened the scoring at the 15:02 mark of the first period. The goal, assisted by Kelsey Kuester, was the prettiest of the season. Julius collected the puck and then completely "undressed" the Gustavus defenseman before going in on goal and slipping the puck past Gustavus goalie Danielle Justice.

Amanda Cartony tied the score for Gustavus in the first four minutes of the second period. She scored at 3:24 to even the game at 1-1. CC senior Kit Hollway restored the one-goal lead just over 10:00 later. She tipped in a shot from Macy Leland to notch her second goal of the season.

The 2-1 lead was extended midway through the third period when Julius scored her second goal of the game. Abby Taffe assisted on the goal at 12:29.

The lead would last for almost four minutes until the Gusties started their two-goal, back-to-back barrage. Allie Schwab picked up the first goal at 16:06. Gustavus then controlled the face-off, got the puck deep in the Cobber zone and tied the game at 16:17. Carolyn Draayer scored the game-tying goal to help GAC tie the score at 3-3.

Concordia was able to hang on to force overtime despite giving up eight shots including one that banged off the pipe.

The teams then skated through a scoreless overtime period with each team having three shots on goal.

Gustavus held a 41-20 edge in shots on goal for the game. Cobber goalie Desiree Goret stopped 38 shots and remained unbeaten on the season. She is now 2-0-1 this year. Justice made 17 saves and is now 10-0-2 this season.

There were only three penalties called in the game – and all were whistled against Concordia. The Cobbers held the Gusties scoreless in their three power play attempts.

Concordia will stay at home next weekend when they host St. Kate's on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4.
