Concordia Excels In Cobber Time
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/25/23)---The fourth quarter is starting to turn into Cobber Time. Concordia trailed St. Olaf 44-38 after three periods of play, but then outscored the Oles 23-8 in the final 10-minutes of play and came away with a 61-52 victory.
The win is the sixth straight for Concordia, and during that stretch they have outscored their opponents by a combined total of 125-85 in the fourth quarter Cobber time.
The victory also ups Concordia's overall record to 14-3 on the season. The 14 total wins are the most since the 2016 season when CC went 18-9.
The win also moves the Cobbers into a tie for second place in the league standings. CC is now 11-3 which is tied with Bethel who lost to league-leading Gustavus on Wednesday.
Concordia was sharp when they needed it most. The CC defense limited St. Olaf to 9.1% (1-for-11) shooting from the floor in the fourth quarter of play. The Oles also made only 1 of their 7 shots from outside the arc in the fourth frame.
On the other end, the Cobbers went 6-for-15 (40.0%) from the floor, and then sealed the victory by going 9-for-10 from the free throw line.
One of the key components of the entire game was Concordia's pressure defense which forced 22 turnovers, and led to a 22-10 advantage in points off of miscues.
Concordia had all but six of their points come from the five starters. CC was led by stat stuffer Emily Beseman who finished with 17 points to go along with six rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Makayla Anderson went for 13 points and also grabbed six rebounds, while Carlee Sieben scored 11 points and recorded a season-high six steals. The six steals are the most in a single game by a CC player since Grace Wolhowe also had six swipes against St. Olaf on Feb. 2, 2019.
Symone Beld was the third member of the Cobber starting lineup to have six rebounds in the game. She also added nine points.
