Defense On Display In Win Over St. Scholastica

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/8/14)—Concordia's defense stole the show in the 65-37 non-conference win over St. Scholastica. The Cobbers forced 34 turnovers and held the Saints to a mere 5.6% (1-for-18) shooting from 3-point range.

The 34 turnovers forced by the Cobbers are the most by an opponent since the 2001-02 season when Concordia forced 35 miscues against Bethel on Jan. 16, 2002.

The turnovers, defense and a 28-6 run over a span of 14 minutes around the halftime break helped the Cobbers earn their fifth win of the season. Concordia is now 5-3 in the first eight games of the year. St. Scholastica continues to look for its first win of the year as they fall to 0-5.

The game went back-and-forth for the first half of the opening period with both teams struggling to get consistent offensive pressure. The two teams combined for 22 points through the first 11 minutes of play. The Saints knocked down their only 3-point field goal of the night to cut the CC lead to five points at 17-12 with 7:34 left to play in the first half.

That's when Concordia started to connect on the offensive end and start to pull away from the Saints. The Cobbers made five straight field goals and suddenly the lead was pushed to 14 points at 26-12 with 3:24 left in the opening period of play.

Concordia would take a 15-point lead at the break at 31-16 and grow the lead to 27 points at 45-18 with 13:38 left in the second half. During the 14 minutes around the halftime break, the Cobbers forced 14 turnovers and limited the Saints to only one field goal as Scholastica was 1-for-16 from the floor. The Saints missed their final nine field goal attempts of the first half.
