20-0 Run Keys Win Over Wildcats

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/25/12)—Concordia held St. Kate's to 25.5% shooting from the floor and a meager 11.1% from 3-point range and went on to post a 64-35 victory over the Wildcats on Wednesday. The win is the third straight for the Cobbers and fifth in the last seven games.

Concordia (11-6/9-5 MIAC) put the game away with a 20-0 run over the span of 8:19 in the first half. The streak erased a one-point deficit at 7-6 and gave the Cobbers a 19-point lead at 22-6. During that decisive run, the CC defense forced five turnovers and didn't allow a single field goal in 10 attempts.

The Cobbers eased the 19-point lead into a 36-13 lead at the break and never allowed the Wildcats to get within 18 points in the second half.  The 29-point margin of victory is the largest of the year for Concordia and the 35 points allowed is the fewest of the season and least given up since Dec. 12 of last season when they only gave up 34 points against St. Mary's.

In the end the Cobbers forced a season-high 26 turnovers. CC used those 26 turnovers to sport a 28-2 advantage in points off of turnovers. Concordia also enjoyed a 26-10 edge in points in the paint.

Concordia finished the game by shooting 42.6% (26-for-61) from the floor but only 13.3% (2-for-15) from outside the arc. The two teams combined to make only four of their 33 attempts (12.1%) from 3-point range.

Tricia Sorensen led all scorers as she went 9-for-14 from the floor and finished with 19 points. She has averaged 19.67 points in her last three games. Sorensen also grabbed 12 rebounds to record her second straight double-double and fourth of the season. CC had three players in double figures and had nine players with at least two points. Emily Thesing added 15 points and five rebounds while Alex Lippert finished with 12 points and four rebounds.

St. Kate' (1-16/0-14 MIAC) did not have a player in double figures in scoring. Sarina Baker, the league's co-leading scorer, was held to just nine points. That is a season low for Baker and the first time she has been held under 10 points for the year. Adele Simerson-Wallfred collected a team-high nine rebounds and three blocks and Megan Zillmer finished with a pair of assists.

Concordia will stay at home and try to continue their climb to the top 3 in the MIAC when they host Augsburg on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. The Cobbers are currently in a three-way tie for third place in the league standings.
