Cobbers Drop Two On Sunday In Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. (3/03/24)---On Saturday, Concordia opened their annual Florida spring training trip by playing two games less than 12 hours after they landed in the Sunshine State. On Sunday, the Cobbers had more rest but dropped a 9-1 decision against Allegheny (Pa.) in five innings and a 5-2 score line to Penn St. Brandywine.

The two defeats drop the Cobbers' Florida record to 0-4. CC is now 3-7 in all games this season.

Concordia 1, Allegheny 9 – 5 innings
Allegheny (1-0) struck first in the opener on Sunday. They scored a pair of runs in the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Concordia cut the deficit in half when Danielle Lyon's sacrifice bunt brought home Rosie Unglaub from third after Unglaub opened the inning with a bunt single.

The Gators broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth when they plated four runs on three hits. They were able to end the game by scoring three more in the bottom of the fifth when they collected four hits.

Allegheny held an 8-2 advantage in hits in the game. Unglaub accounted for both of the CC base knocks. She was 2-for-2 on the morning as she collected her second career multiple-hit game.

Lauren Staples pitched all five innings for the Cobbers. She only allowed two earned runs as CC committed five errors. Staples allowed eight hits and struck out a pair.        

Concordia 2, Penn St. Brandywine 5
The Cobbers held their first lead of the day when the plated a single run in the bottom of the third against Brandywine. The big hit in the inning came from Kailee Falconer, who laced a triple to right field that scored Kyla Abrahamson after Abrahamson led off the frame with a walk. The 3-base hit was Falconer's team-leading second of the season.

Brandywine (2-2) turned the game in the top of the fourth when they scored three runs on four hits to take a 3-1 lead. They would tack on single runs in the fifth and sixth stanzas before the Cobbers brought the final score to 5-2 with a single run in the seventh.

First-year catcher Morgan Linstad walked to start the seventh and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly when Emma Bowman flied out to right field.

Concordia had three hits in the game vs. Brandywine. Falconer, Gabby Brown and Bowman all had single hits in the second game of the day.

Karissa Finnigan went the distance in the circle. She allowed four earned runs on nine hits and struck out three.
