Storyline Remains The Same On Day 2 In Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. (2/18/24)---The second day of the BLC Kwik Trip Invitational saw Concordia posting an identical storyline to opening-day on Saturday. The Cobbers lost to host Bethany Lutheran and beat another UMAC opponent.

Sunday opened with Concordia steamrolling Martin Luther 11-0 in five innings. CC then started Game 2 on a high note by taking a 2-1 lead in the first frame before allowing three straight crooked-run innings and falling 9-2 to the Vikings.

The story of the second day in Mankato for the Cobbers was the offense. CC banged out a combined total of 22 hits and scored 13 runs.

Concordia 11, Martin Luther 0 – 5 innings
The Cobbers jumped on Martin Luther from the opening pitch in the bottom of the first inning. Concordia scored four times in the first and five more in the second as they recorded their second straight win via the 8-run rule.

Concordia had 13 hits in the game and 10 of those came in the first two frames.

Kailee Falconer set the tone for the Cobbers offense in the early-morning game. She doubled to left field to open the inning, stole third base and then scored on the throwing error from the catcher.

The two other big hits in the first came off the bats of Danielle Lyon and Jocelyn Maki. Lyon tripled to right field to score Emma Bowman and then Maki produced her first collegiate homer to plate Lyon.

The second inning was more of the same for CC. They sent 10 batters to the plate, knocked out six hits and scored five runs. Falconer and Lyon both had singles in the 5-run inning with Morgan Linstad collecting her first college hit and RBI and Gabriella Castro coming through with a pinch-hit single up the middle to score the fifth run of the inning.

Falconer, Lyon, Maki and Kyla Abrahamson all had two hits in the game to account for eight of the 13 base knocks. CC also finished with three extra-base hits and four stolen bases.

Junior Lexi Burke pitched all five innings for the Cobbers to record her first college win. She only allowed one hit and struck out two in the 5.0 innings of work.

Concordia 2, Bethany Lutheran 9
The second game started in identical fashion as the first for the Cobber offense. CC allowed one run in the top first and responded with a multiple-run inning in the bottom of the inning.

Falconer got the offense rolling for the second game when she led off with a single up the middle. Reese Hauck followed with a double up the middle that scored Falconer and then Maki doubled home Hauck one batter later.

Unfortunately for CC, that would be the end of the scoring despite the fact they had nine total hits.
The story of the game for the offense was the nine players left on base and for the defense, it was the five errors. Concordia allowed nine runs, but only six were earned.

Falconer and Maki posted multiple-hit games for in the day's second game as well. Falconer went 3-for-4, while Maki was 2-for-4.

Mallory Leitner and Lauren Staples combined to pitch the 7 innings for CC. Leitner opened with the first 4.0 innings and allowed five runs. Staples finished the final 3.0 innings and didn't give up a hit and only one earned run.

UP NEXT: Concordia will stay indoors next weekend when they travel to St. Cloud to take on Minn.-Morris in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 24.
