Start Me Up - Cobbers Split On Opening Day

MANKATO, Minn. (2/17/24)---Concordia jumped into the 2014 season by splitting a pair of games in the Bethany Lutheran Dome Invite at the Mankato Dome.

The Cobbers fell to host Bethany Lutheran 10-4 in the opener and then posted a 9-1 win over North Central which ended after 5 innings.

The Cobbers fell behind 6-0 after two innings of play but then rallied to score a single run in the third frame, two more in the fourth and another lone run in the fifth.

Concordia was outhit 15-4 in the opener with two of their four base knocks going for extra bases. Kailee Falconer had a run-scoring double in the third inning and then Danielle Lyon recorded the first home run of the season for CC as she went yard in the fourth frame to drive in two more runs. Falconer also drove in the fourth Concordia run when Rosie Unglaub scored from third base on a Falconer ground out.

The Cobbers split the pitching duties between Karissa Finnigan and Lauren Staples. Finnigan got the start and went 3.0 innings She allowed nine runs on nine hits. Staples finished off the final 4.0 innings and didn't allow an earned run, gave up only three hits and struck out a pair.

Concordia 9, North Central (Minn.) 1 – 5 innings
It was the Mallory Leitner, Emma Bowman and Jocelyn Maki show in the second game against North Central. The three players combined to go 8-for-11 at the plate with seven RBI, a trio of extra-base hits and the win in the pitching circle.

Mallory Leitner did damage with her arm and bat. She pitched the full 5.0 innings, allowed only one run on four hits and struck out six. Leitner also connected on her first collegiate home run when she left the yard in the second inning. Her long ball drove in three runs and pushed the Cobbers' lead from 2-0 to 6-0.

Bowman was 4-for-4 in the second game. She also drove in three runs and scored three runs. Bowman recorded a double in the fifth inning.

Maki went 3-for-3 in her first collegiate start. She scored on a pair of occasions and also drove in a run.  

Sophomore Reese Hauck was the third CC player to record multiple hits in Game 2. She was 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot in the order and scored two runs.

UP NEXT: Concordia will finish out the Dome weekend by playing Martin Luther and Bethany Lutheran on Sunday, Feb. 18.
