Cobbers Return To Action After 20-Day Break

ROSEMOUNT, Minn. (3/29/23)---Concordia returned to action for the first time since their annual trip to Florida, and dropped a pair of games to Minn.-Morris at the Irish Dome in Rosemount.

In their first competition in 20 days, Concordia gave up several big-run innings and lost 15-4 in five innings in the first game, and 9-1 in six innings in the second game.   

Gabby Brown and Molly Wilde were the offensive standouts on the day, as both players blasted solo home runs.

Concordia (4-12) fell behind 6-0 in Game 1 after allowing three runs in each of second and third innings. Brown got the Cobbers on the bottom of the third when she clouted her first collegiate home run. She led off the inning with a blast over the left-center field fence.

Morris (6-12) broke the game open with right runs on seven hits in the fifth frame. CC was able to get three runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Brown led off the scoring in the inning when she singled to left field. Lexi Burke pinch ran for Brown and advanced to second base when Reese Hauck followed with a single up the middle. Both runners would come around to score as they combined for two of the three innings in the inning.

The Cobbers were outhit 6-6 in the opener. Brown and Hauck were both 2-for-2 and combined to score two runs. Karissa Finnigan and Kate Gulbranson picked up the other hits – and both were doubles.  

Finnigan started the game in the circle for CC and went the first 3.2 innings. She only allowed four earned runs. Vanessa Ramos finished off the opener by pitching 1.1 innings.

The second game was tied at 1-1after 3.5 innings, but then the Cougars scored three in the bottom of the fourth, and tacked on four more in the fifth to push the game close to the 8-run rule. The game would end in the sixth when Morris came through with a single, a stolen base and then a single down the left-field line to end the contest at 9-1.

The Cobbers had three hits in the nightcap. The biggest of those three came in the fourth when Wilde laced a 1-out pitch over the left-field fence for her team-leading third long ball of the year.

Kate Wensloff and Mallory Leitner had the other hits for CC in Game 2. Leitner was also the starting pitcher and went the first 4.0 innings. She gave up three earned runs. Lauren Staples pitched the final three outs and struck out two.

UP NEXT: Concordia was scheduled to host Carleton and St. Mary's over the weekend. The DH against the Knights has been postponed until Apr. 30, while the twinbill against the Cardinals is still being rescheduled.
