Fitting Finish In Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. (03/04/22)---Concordia finished off their annual spring trip to Florida by splitting its final two games of their southern swing. The Cobbers beat Adrian (Mich.) 4- 3 in 9 innings in the opener and then lost 12-4 in 6 innings to Cabrini (Pa.).

The split is the third of the trip for Concordia who finishes their 10 games in Florida with a 5-5 record. CC is now 6-6 overall in 2022.

The win over Adrian was probably the most dramatic of the spring trip. Concordia fell behind 1-0 before scoring two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs answered with a single run in the sixth before the game went to extra innings and the international base runner rule.

Neither team scored in the eighth inning, but then the Cobbers fell behind 3-2 in the top of the ninth. Freshman Danielle Lyon led off the ninth with a double that scored Ellie Tofteland who started the inning on second base. Caitlin Culleton sacrificed Lyon to third, and then Kate Wensloff singled home Lyon for the game-winning run.

Senior All-Region pitcher Megan Gavin went the full 9.0 innings in the circle and threw over 150 pitches. She struck out 15 for the second time in a game in Florida. Gavin allowed two earned runs and scattered eight hits to pick up her fifth win of the year.

Gavin now has 69 strikeouts in her seven appearances in 2022. She has double-digit fan totals in four of her six starts.

The Cobbers collected their first two runs against Adrian in the fourth when Landry Maragos singled home Rosie Unglaub with two outs in the frame, and then Emma Redlin brought home a run after she was beaned with the bases loaded.

Concordia outhit the Bulldogs 12-8 in the opener. Wensloff went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Vanessa Ramos and Gabby Brown both had two hits in the game.

The Cobbers fell behind early in the second game. Cabrini was able to score three times in the first and then two more in the second to force CC to chase the game.

Concordia got one run back in the top of the second when Culleton singled home Wensloff, after Wensloff pounded a 1-out double into the gap in left field.

CC then put up a 3-spot in the sixth. The Cobbers had five hits in the inning with Molly Wilde, Wensloff and Culleton all picking up RBI hits.
