Cobbers Drop 2 On Day 4 In Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. (03/03/22)---A day after getting its first sweep of the season, the Cobbers lost back-to-back games for the first time in 2022.

Concordia lost 5-0 to unbeaten Moravian (Pa.), and then fell 4-3 to Rose-Hulman (Ind.) in the second game.

The losses bring the Cobbers' season record to 5-5.

A pair of crooked-run innings cost Concordia in the first game. CC allowed three runs in the third and then two more in the sixth as they were shutout for the first time this season.

The Cobbers' best chance to score in Game 1 came in the very first inning when they recorded both of their hits in the game. Landry Maragos led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single down the third-base line. She was then sacrificed to second by Kenzie Leither. Ellie Tofteland followed with a single up the middle. Maragos turned the corner at third and tried to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate for the second out.

Senior Megan Gavin went the first 6.0 innings, allowed five earned runs on five hits and struck out seven. Karissa Finnigan pitched a scoreless seventh inning and didn't allow a hit.

The second game was close throughout. Rose-Hulman took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Cobbers countered with three runs in the second to grab a 3-1 lead. The Engineers then tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second. The game would stay tied at 3-3 until Rose-Hulman plated the game-winning run in the fifth frame.

Both teams had eight hits in the nightcap. Emma Redlin, Danielle Lyon and Kate Wensloff all had two hits in the game for Concordia. Maragos and Drew Syverson had the other hits for CC.

Tofteland had a walk against the Engineers and has now reached base safely in a team-high five games.

Vanessa Ramos went the first 5.0 innings in the circle for the Cobbers. She only allowed one earned run as CC had four miscues in the game. Gavin entered the game in the sixth and posted strikeouts for all three outs in the inning.

UP NEXT: Concordia will finish off the spring trip on Friday, Mar. 4 when they face Adrian (Mich.) at 11:30 a.m. and then Cabrini (Pa.) at 1:45 p.m.
