Second Florida Verse, Same As The First

CLERMONT, Fla. (02/28/22)---For the second straight day, senior All-Region pitcher Megan Gavin was nearly untouchable and helped the Cobbers earn a split in Florida.

Gavin got the start in the opener against Calvin (Mich.) and threw a 2-hit shutout while striking out 12 to lead Concordia to a 2-0 victory over the Knights.

The Cobbers were unable to put up a multiple-run inning in the second game of the day and lost 5-2 to Dubuque.

The split keeps the Cobbers' overall record on the year at 3-3. CC is 2-2 in its four games in Florida.

It took Gavin one full inning to reach gas level. After setting down Calvin 1-2-3 in the first inning on three fly outs, Gavin put together a "mow-'em" down inning in the second when she struck out all three batters.

Gavin's no-hit bid was stopped with two outs in the third when she gave up a 2-out single. The only other hit for the Knights came in the fifth when she allowed a leadoff single. Gavin then struck out three of the next four batters she faced.

Since stepping outside to throw from an infield dirt circle, Gavin has struck out 27 in 14.0 innings pitched and has only allowed one run.

The Cobbers won the opener with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The game-winning run came when freshman Danielle Lyon pounced (I'll show myself out now) on a pitch and singled home Kenzie Leither who led off the inning by getting on base due to an error.

Ellie Tofteland would drive home the insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Emma Redlin led off the frame with a single. Freshman Rosie Unglaub pinch ran for Redlin and advanced to second on a sacrifice. She then scored from second on the clutch, 2-out single from Tofteland.

The Cobbers held a 5-2 edge in hits in the opener. CC had five different players with a single base hit. Molly Wilde had the only extra-base hit of the game when she came through with a 1-out double in the third.

Concordia used the momentum from the first game to take a 1-0 lead over Dubuque in the top of the first in the finale. Valerie Kolstad singled home Leither who walked and stole second.

Kolstad's RBI base hit would be one of only four against the Spartans. Kate Wensloff had a 2-out single in the fourth, a single by Tofteland in the fifth and a single up the middle from Redlin in the seventh.

Vanessa Ramos had her best outing in the circle for the maroon and gold. She went the full 6.0 innings, allowed only three earned runs and struck out three. It was her first collegiate complete game.
