Clutch Hit Goes A-Begging In Loss To Neumann

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (02/27/22)---Concordia split their first two game on their annual spring trip to Florida. The Cobbers rode the arm of Megan Gavin, who struck out 15, to post a 7-1 win over Elizabethtown (Pa.) in the opener, but then stranded 10 runners and fell 12-3 to Neumann (N.J.) in the second game.

The win/loss storyline continues the theme for Concordia in the early part of the season. The Cobbers are now 2-2 on the year after splitting a pair of game inside in Mankato earlier in the month.

Concordia had 13 hits in each game as they hit a combined .388 on the first day in Florida.

The Cobbers had 10 different players collect at least one hit in their win over Elizabethtown. Concordia never trailed in the game as they scored a pair of runs in the third inning, then added single scores in the fifth and sixth frames before closing out the score line with a trio of runs in the seventh.

Kenzie Leither, Ellie Tofteland and Gabby Brown had multiple-hit games for CC with each player going 2-for-4.

Freshman Danielle Lyon led the team with two RBI when she opened the scoring with a 2-run single in the third frame.

Gavin, pitching outdoors for the first time all season, showed her All-Region form of 2021 as she struck out 15 batters and allowed a single earned run in collecting her second win of the season. It marks the third time in the last two seasons that she has fanned at least 15 batters in a game.

Gavin now has 521 career strikeouts as she continues to add to her school-record total.

The second game was all about missed opportunities. Concordia had at least one hit in all seven innings against Neumann , but hit .143 with runners on third base and went 1-for-7 with two outs in the inning as they dropped the finale.

Landry Maragos and Hailey Pangracs each had three hits to lead the CC offense. Maragos went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot, while Pangracs was 3-for-4 and scored two of the team's three runs.

Leither collected her second multiple-hit game of the day. She went 2-for-4 and had an RBI.

Hannah Wilke posted the other multiple-hit game against Neumann. She was 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored a run.

Karissa Finnigan started the second game in the circle for the Cobbers.  She went the first 4.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on eight hits.

Vanessa Ramos threw the final 3.0 innings and allowed five earned runs and struck out three.
