MOORHEAD, MINN. (4/11/21)---The first game in the Cobbers' home doubleheader with St. Catherine went back-and-forth and produced plenty of late-game drama. The second was all one-way traffic and capped off the two wins for the Wildcats.
Concordia had leads of 3-1 and 4-2 in the opener before St. Catherine put up four unanswered runs and claimed a 6-4 victory. The Cobbers then lost 8-0 in five innings in Game 2.
The Cobbers trailed 1-0 after the top of the third inning in the first game but proceeded to post three runs to take a 3-1 lead. CC got the trio of runs on four hits and could have pushed across more but finished the frame with the bases loaded. Landry Maragos, Kate Wensloff and Caitlin Culleton had the RBI in the inning which was started by a Kenzie Leither double to center field.
St. Catherine would scratch across a dingle run in the fourth before Concordia countered with a lone run in the fifth.
Culleton brought home her second run of the game. Taylor Erholtz singled with one out and Solveig Lundberg came in to pinch run. Lundberg would advance to second on a wild pitch and then score on Culleton's ground ball.
The Wildcats tied the game in the sixth when they scored twice on two hits. Both runs came after there were two outs in the inning. St. Catherine also scored their second run in the seventh with two outs.
The Wildcats held an 8-6 edge in hits in the opener and both teams committed two errors.
Erholtz and Leither had multiple-hit games for Concordia. Both players went 2-for-3.
Two stat categories that stood out in both games came with runners on base and with two outs in the innings. St. Kate's hit .360 (9-for-25) with runners in scoring position in the two games while CC was 1-for-13 (.077) with two outs in an inning.
Cobber senior pitcher Megan Gavin pitched all 7.0 innings and struck out eight. She allowed five earned runs on eight hits.
The second game was turned in St. Catherine's favor in the first inning when they scored four runs – all of which came after there were two outs in the frame.
CC had three hits in Game 2 with Wensloff and Leither recording doubles and Maragos picking up her second hit of the day.
FABULOUS 400: Gavin's eight Ks in the opener pushed her career strikeout total over the 400 mark. She now has 403 career strikeouts and is only the second pitcher to reach the 400-K milestone. She is now 37 strikeouts shy of the Cobber school record of 440 set by Abby Haraldson from 2014-18.
WE FEST: Wensloff and Erholtz have been on hot streaks at the plate for CC. Both players now have four multiple-hit games on the year and both are hitting above .300. Wensloff is tied for the team lead in hitting with a .364 average and Erholtz is fourth at .328. Wensloff leads the team with a .475 on-base percentage and Erholtz is tops in slugging percentage at .607.
