MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/01/17)--- Concordia will be hoping the rest of April won't be as long as the first day as the Cobbers dropped a pair of eight-run rule games to St. Benedict in the conference opener.
Concordia gave up three multiple-run innings in the opener and lost 11-3 in six innings and then conceded six runs in the fourth and fell 20-2 in five innings in the finale.
The two losses in the MIAC opener drop the Cobbers' overall record to 8-10. The Blazers win for the ninth time in the last 12 games and are now 13-5 overall.
Concordia fell behind early as they allowed a pair of runs in the first inning and then three more in the second. The Cobbers cut the lead to 5-3 when sophomore first baseman Sydney Roberts blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. Cora Zackrison and Madi Veith, who had both singled earlier in the inning, scored ahead of Roberts.
Unfortunately for the Cobbers that would be all of the offense in the first game. The Blazers would then add four runs in the top of the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth to end the opener early.
Concordia had three hits in the first game and all three came in the three-run third.
The second game went south in a hurry with CC allowing five runs in the first frame, three in the second and then five more in the third.
Roberts' bat once again provided one of the big offensive hits for the Cobbers. She hit a solo homer in the fourth inning.
Concordia's other run in the second game came courtesy of leadoff hitter Madison Little. Little singled in the bottom of the first and then advanced to third on an over throw on a fly ball to the outfield. Little scored on a wild pitch on the very next batter.
The Cobbers had four hits in the finale. Besides Roberts and Little – Veith and Taylor Rasmussen also had base knocks.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will stay at home and host Carleton in the second half of the conference back-to-back weekend. The Cobbers will square off against the Knights on Sunday, Apr. 2 at 1 p.m. Carleton is 7-7 on the year and dropped two games to Hamline in their conference opener on Saturday.
