Eye-Opening Events Pace Cobbers On Day 2 At MIAC Meet

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/11/14)—Day 2 wasn't as dramatic for the Cobbers as the opener at the MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet but it still had plenty of eye-opening performances.

Junior Anthony Marsh and first-year distance runner Brady Goss led Concordia on Saturday as CC finished sixth in the final team standings.

The Cobbers closed out the 2-day meet with 73 team points. That total was 25 points ahead of 7th-Gustavus. The 73 points is a big improvement over last year when Concordia placed seventh with a total of 41.50 points.

Marsh came out of nowhere to place second in the high jump on Saturday. He entered the meet seeded ninth with a season-best mark of 6-0.75. Marsh proceeded to work his way up the ladder by successfully clearing five heights before he rose up and went over the bar at 6-08.25. That height was good for second place and tied Marsh for the No.4 all-time mark in program history.

Junior Peyton Johnsrud gave Concordia two athletes earning team points in the high jump. Johnsrud cleared 6-03.25 and finished in sixth place.

Goss made a huge splash in the MIAC steeplechase community on Day 2. He went toe-to-toe with the perennial favorites from St. Olaf and Carleton and edged his way into the Top 3 at the finish line. Goss crossed the line with a time of 9:12.94 which was the third fastest on the day. He nearly kicked his way into second place but was edged at the tape by .01 of a second.

Goss' time of 9:12.94 was the third fastest in program history and less than 6 seconds away from the school record by Henrik Pederson which was set in 1984.

Senior Cole Nowacki capped his conference career with a podium finish in the steeplechase. He ran a 9:39.36 to finish in the No.8 spot and earn a team point. His time made it back-to-back steeplechase events where he broke the 9:40.00 mark.

The other team points scored by an individual on Saturday came from the legs of Logan Clark and the arm of Sam Dioszeghy. Clark qualified for the finals of the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.45 and then bested that mark on Saturday with a personal-best time of 15.34. That time pushed him into seventh place in the event and in the Top 20 of the Cobber all-time list.

Dioszeghy, who finished eighth in the shot put on Friday, doubled up on his podium finishes by placing seventh in the discus. He was the only CC athlete to claim team points in more than one "throw" event at the meet. Dioszeghy posted a distance of 133-00 on his third attempt to claim the two team points.

Concordia had both of its relay teams record season-best times. The 4x100-meter relay team of Mason Dahl, Trevor Tiongson, Jordan Petron and Ben Peterson clocked a 43.00. That mark was the sixth fastest on the day and .38 faster than their previous season-best time.

Tiongson was joined by Goss, Zander Gallmeier and Wade Rhonemus for the final event of the meet- the 4x400-meter relay. The make-shift quartet turned in a season-best time of 3:23.65. That time was good for seventh place and two team points.
