Quartet Of 2nd-Half Goals Leads To Cruise Control At Morris
MORRIS, Minn. (9/06/23)---Concordia scored four goals in a span of 20 minutes in the second half to turn a 1-0 lead into a 5-0 rout at Minn.-Morris. The Cobbers got a pair of goals from junior transfer Leo Dunor as they won for the second time in three games to start the season.
THE 411: Concordia controlled possession throughout the entire game but couldn't find the back of the net for the first 30 minutes of play. That all changed when Dunor was subbed on at the 30:25 mark of the first half. He made his presence felt immediately, when he took a cross from Gavin Groshelle, sidestepped the defender and then buried it into the net from 12-yards out. Yonas Adams started the play at midfield and picked up his first assist of the year.
Freshman Owen Gallo started the Cobber quartet of goals in the second half. Gallo recorded the first goal of his collegiate career at 57:44. That was followed by Dunor's second goal of the game at 64:39 and the first-of-the-year goals from Adams and Edwin Rasidovic. Adams posted an assist on Rasidovic's goal, giving him a 3-point game.
THE NEXT LEVEL: Dunor has now scored four goals in the Cobbers' first three games of the year. He also scored two goals in CC's 2-1 opening-game win at Dubuque. Dunor's four goals have him tied atop the MIAC scoring list. Dunor also led the team with six total shots and three shots on goal. He leads the Cobbers with 13 total shots and seven shots on frame this year. Both of those totals place him third in the conference.
THE NUMBERS GAME: Concordia outshot the Cougars 20-6 in total shots and 9-2 in shots on goal. The Cobbers also held a decided 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. CC had 10 shots in each half, while UMM posted identical 3-shot halves.
INDIVIDUALLY SPEAKING: Besides the 3-point game from Adams and the double strike from Dunar, Concordia also got the goal from Gallo and opening helpers of the year from Groshelle, Matthew Niblock and Matthew Nemer. Grosehelle's assist was the second of his career, while Niblock earned his first career point on Adam's goal. Nemer, who starred for the Cobbers tennis team in the spring, collected his 14th career point.
Cobber keeper Jensen Waltz made two saves in the game, but one was a huge stop to keep the momentum in CC's favor in the first half. The shutout was the first of his career, and he now has two career wins.
UP NEXT: Concordia will host its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 10, when they face Neb. Wesleyan at 12 p.m. at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
