Late Game Winner Goes In Favor Of The Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/15/22)---Last weekend, Concordia had a late-game-winning goal go against them. On Saturday the Cobbers turned the table, scored their own late game winner and beat Augsburg 2-1.

Sophomore Kai Black's goal in the 74th minute of play earned the Cobbers their second conference win of the season and ended a 6-game winless streak for CC.

Concordia (3-9-1, 2-3-1 MIAC) never trailed in the game. The Cobbers got off to the perfect start as they struck for a goal in the first six minutes of play.

Concordia had the early possession and earned a pair of throw-ins on the right wing, deep in Augsburg's defensive third of the field. The second throw turned into gold for CC. Liam Weiler's long throw-in sailed past the group of players in front of goal where Yousif Alshihmani was able to latch on to the ball at the back post. He fired a quick left-footed shot that beat the keeper toward the middle of the net.

The goal, at the 5:35 mark, was Alshihmani's third of the season – and third in the last five games. His three goals are tied for the team lead. Weiler recorded his second assist of the year. Both of his helpers have come on throw-ins.

The game would stay at 1-0 in favor through the halftime break and into the 19th minute of the second frame. Both teams had three shots in the first half, with the majority of play going between the penalty areas.

Augsburg (8-2-4, 3-2-3 MIAC) nearly tied the game just before the break, but a full out diving stop by CC goalie Erick Torres on a dead ball kept the Cobbers in the lead.

The Auggies tied the game in the 64th minute of play on a penalty kick. The Auggies earned the spot kick when a Cobber slid to the ground to block a shot and the ball caromed off his arm as he was on the playing surface.

The Cobbers upped their offensive attack after the goal, and it was rewarded less than 10-minutes later. Senior Nate Weaver earned possession of the ball, 45 yards out from goal on the right side of the field. He sent a perfectly placed pass down the right edge of the penalty area to freshman Gannon Brooks who ran on to the ball and fired a 1-time cross towards the middle of the net. Black started his run from 30 yards out, broke towards the near post and stuck out his left foot to 1-touched the serve. His shot beat the Auggie goalie to the near post and proved to be the game winner.

Augsburg made one last flurry late in the game, but Torres was able to come up with another diving stop to protect the 1-goal lead.

Both teams finished with nine total shots. The Cobbers had a perfect 100-percent shot rate as all nine were on goal. Alshihmani and Telvin Vah both had three shots to lead CC.

Torres finished the game with five saves, and earned his third win of the year.

UP NEXT: Concordia only have 48 hours to celebrate the win, as they host Carleton on Monday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m.
