Early-Half, Throw-In Goals Cause Trouble In Arden Hills

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (10/26/91)---Concordia conceded a goal off a throw-in, in the first five minutes of each half and lost 3-1 at Bethel.

The Cobbers were able to get within a single goal in the final two minutes of the second half, but then a final goal in the last 2-seconds of the game for the Royals brought the final score to 3-1.

The loss takes Concordia out of conference postseason contention. CC is now 5-11 overall and 2-7 in the MIAC. Bethel wins for the second time in the last four games and moves to 9-7-1 in all games and 3-5-1 in league play.

The first goal of the game came at the 3:18 mark of the game and would be the first of two Bethel goals scored after a throw-in deep in the Concordia defensive zone. The Royals used a long throw to get the ball in the middle of the penalty area. The ball was knocked out of the penalty area, but a Bethel player was standing 25-yards out from goal and played it back into the top of the 6-yard box. Two players collided as they went for the ball which caromed to an open attacker who 1-times a shot into the left lower corner of the net.

The eventual game-winning goal came at the 4:15 mark of the second half. The Royals had a throw-in on the right wing. The ball was played into the middle of the goal area where a BU attacker flicked the ball with his head to the back post and it rolled just inside the left post.

The Cobbers would have several chances before getting within one at the 88:31 mark. Concordia had a corner kick on the right side of the net and the ball was served in by Telvin Vah. The cross was a low line drive, and when a Bethel defender dove to head the ball it hit off his arm and CC was awarded a penalty kick.

Vah converted the ensuing PK for his MIAC-leading 14th goal of the year. He also leads the conference with 33 points. Vah has at least one goal in the last seven games and has a total of 10 goals during that stretch.

The Royals finished the scoring by getting their third with just 3-seconds left in the game. They took advantage of the Cobbers pushing everyone into attack to try and get the game winner and scored on the counterattack.

Bethel held a 23-13 advantage in shots in a game that featured nine cards handed out.

Nate Weaver
