Schaefer Earns MIAC Honor

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/16/19)---Senior Henry Schaefer used his 2-way skills to earn MIAC Player if the Week honors. Schaefer, who is the team's top defender, posted a pair of assists to help the Cobber beat Buena Vista 3-0 and remain unbeaten in 2019.

The conference weekly award is the first of his career for Schaefer. He becomes the first Cobber player to receive the honor since Ben Glogoza was named the MIAC Player of the Week on Sept. 12, 2016. It marks only the second time that a Concordia student/athlete has earned the award since the 2012 season.

Schaefer earned the lone assist on each of the first two goals in Concordia's win over Buena Vista on Saturday. He picked up the helper on the game-winning goal when he used his long throw-in ability to set up fellow central defender Tyson Aberle in the fourth minute of play. The assist was his second in as many games as he also picked up one in the Cobbers' 5-0 win over Neb. Wesleyan on Sept. 8.

Schaefer's second assist of the game, and third of the year, came in the 16th minute of the second half – and it also came on a dead ball service. Schaefer served a free kick from 50 yards out of goal into the penalty area where freshman Casey Haldis was able to collect the ball, beat a defender and slide a shot from 8-yards out into the left side of the net.

Schaefer's three assists on the year are already a high-water mark in a single season for the 3-year starter. He put up two assists in both his sophomore and junior seasons.

Schaefer's career form has also helped Concordia post its best start to a season since the 2001 campaign. His defensive prowess has also helped the Cobbers record three shutouts in their first four games of the year. CC had three shutouts in the entire 2018 season.

Schaefer will be hoping to carry his success into the team's conference opener when the Cobbers host St. John's on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
