Getting Closer

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/07/14)—Concordia continues to progress to posting their first result of the year as they held a second-half lead for the first time all season before falling to Simpson 2-1 in the final game of the Cobber Invite.

Concordia grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute of play when sophomore Sage Thornbrugh converted a penalty kick after freshman midfielder Jacob Schmidt was taken down in the penalty area. Thornbrugh confidently found the back of the net for his first goal of the season and the Cobbers had their first second-half lead of the year.

The 1-0 margin would last for 10 minutes before Simpson was able to equalize. The Storm finally got on the board with a score at the 63:22 mark.

The game-winning goal would come at 70:20. A Simpson attacker was able to receive the ball at the top of the Cobber penalty area and then fired a shot which caromed off of a Concordia defender and then over the top of CC goalie Alan Scheuermann who was helpless to stop the deflected shot.

The Cobbers had one terrific chance to tie the game in the final 10 minutes of play. Freshman forward Robert Fordyce knifed a ball through the back of the Simpson defense and played Matthew Fulks clear on a breakaway. Fulks hammered a shot towards the lower corner but the Storm goalie came up with a huge game-saving diving stop.

The one-goal defeat is the closest margin of the year for the Cobbers who continue to gain valuable playing experience for the freshmen and sophomore dominated lineup.

Concordia had six shots in the game with three on goal. Fordyce led CC with three shots and one on frame.

Scheuermann was making his first collegiate start in goal for CC and played solidly throughout the 90 minutes of play. He turned aside eight shots and was able to start the Concordia offense through his ability to quickly distribute the ball.

Thornbrugh and Schmidt were both named to the Cobber Invite All-Tournament Team. Both players were strong on the ball in the attacking half of play and helped CC alleviate pressure in the defensive end. It marks the second straight weekend that Schmidt has earned All-Tournament honors.

The Cobbers will now head to Colorado for a pair of games next weekend. Concordia will play Centenary (La.) on Saturday, Sept. 13 and then Colorado College on Sunday, Sept. 14. Both games will be played on the campus of Colorado College.
