From Goal Stopper To Prolific Goal Scorer

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/12/13)—In 2012 Brett Wegleitner was Concordia's starting central defender. In 2013 he is the team's forward and the third leading scorer in the MIAC. Give him one more season and he might add midfielder and top assist man to his resume.

Wegleitner struck again on Saturday as he scored both goals in the Cobbers' 2-1 at Hamline. He has now scored four goals in the last three games and has at least one goal in six of the team's last eight games. Wegleitner has eight goals of Concordia's 11 goals on the year.

The win is the second straight for the Cobbers and second consecutive against a conference opponent. It is the first time CC has won back-to-back games against MIAC foes since the 2010 season.  Concordia is now 3-8-1 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Wegleitner notched his first goal less than 15 minutes into the game. With Hamline pressing Concordia at every turn, freshman midfielder Sage Thornbrugh won the ball in the middle of the field and created space by beating a pair of defenders. He then found sophomore wing Dami Adegunle outside the Piper backs. Adegunle turned the ball into the penalty area and tried to beat the oncoming central defender. The ball caromed off Adegunle and went straight to Wegleitner who hammered it off the far post and into the net.

The lead would last for almost 18 minutes until a Hamline attacker was able to draw a penalty kick after he was tripped inside the penalty area. Jake Niemann then converted the spot kick at 31:03 to tie the game at 31:03.

The Thornbrugh/Wegleitner connection struck for Concordia's second goal as well. Thornbrugh broke free on the wing and then served the ball to the far post where Wegleitner ran on to it and one-timed it into the goal in the 68th minute. It was third assist in the last two games for Thornbrugh and his team-leading fifth assist of the season.  That ties for the most assists by a Cobber player in a single season since 2010. For Wegleitner it was his team-leading 17th point of the year. That ties for the best season total by a CC player since 2011.

Concordia was able to hold onto the 2-1 lead in the final 20 minutes of play. The Pipers had five shots in the final 20 minutes but couldn't get one by CC freshman keeper Ben Glogoza. Glogoza finished with four saves in the game to earn his first collegiate win. He is now 1-0-1 on the season.

The Cobbers held a 12-6 advantage in total shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.

Concordia will put their two-game conference winning streak on the line when they host Bethel on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
