Another One-Goal Heartbreaker

ELMHURST, Ill. (10/08/12)— Concordia continued their recent trend of heartbreaking one-goal losses on Monday as they dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision at Elmhurst. The Cobbers battled the Blue Jays for 81 minutes before a penalty kick call in the 82nd minute gave Elmhurst the one-goal win.

The loss is the second straight for the Cobbers and drops their overall record to 5-8 on the year. Elmhurst ads to their win total and is now 8-6.

It was a tale of two halves for the Cobbers. Concordia was able to sustain a solid offensive attack in the first half but then tired in the second and allowed more quality chances. The Cobbers were playing their third game in five days and showed the effects of having to travel over 1100 miles to participate in the trio of games.

The two teams were practically even on the stat sheet for the first 45 minutes of the game. Elmhurst held a slight 5-4 edge in total shots and a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams were also whistled for just two fouls each.

The game turned in the first three minutes of the second period when the Blue Jays had two consecutive corner kicks and then held the Cobber offense in check until the game-winning goal. Elmhurst scored the only goal of the game when an attacker was taken down in the penalty area at the 81:07 mark. Michael Delong converted the following spot kick to put the Blue Jays up 1-0. It was the fourth penalty kick whistled against the Cobbers in the last four games.

Concordia had the final two chances of the game but a shot by junior midfielder Jannick Bettels was turned aside and the following corner kick was cleared away from danger.

The Cobbers were outshot 12-7 in total shots for the game and 6-4 in shots on goal. The Blue Jays had a 6-2 margin in corner kicks. CC goalie Peter Runquist made four saves while Elmhurst keeper John Reglin stopped three shots to earn his seventh win of the year.

Concordia will make the long journey home and have to be back on the field on Wednesday, Oct. 10 when they host Jamestown at 4 p.m.
