Chances Are Unkind To Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/25/12)—One team made the most of their chances and scored three times while the other was thwarted by the post, terrific saves from the goalie and not being able to find the back of the net. Unfortunately for Concordia they fell into the latter category and lost 3-0 to St. Thomas in Moorhead.

The Cobbers gave up a goal in the 20th minute, a penalty kick in the final two minutes of the first half and then a counterattack goal late in the second period and lost for the third straight game. CC is now 4-5-0 in all games and 1-3-0 in league play. The Tommies run their unbeaten streak to three games and are now 6-2-2 overall. UST is still without a blemish in MIAC play and ups their record to 3-0-0.

Concordia had pair of chances in the first 15 minutes of the game that could have swung the game's momentum but each time they came up inches short. The first chance came from a throw-in that was headed toward the middle of the goal. A Cobber attacking player reached out his left foot to tap the ball in the goal from 4-yards out but the ball slid past his foot and out of harm's way. The second chance came from the top of the penalty area where a clear shooting lane was closed down just as the CC attacker hammered his shot towards the goal.

St. Thomas got the eventual game-winning goal at 19:50 when Ryan Bernhardt collected his own rebound off the post and pushed it into the left side netting of the goal. The Tommies got an insurance goal at the very end of the first half when forward Nick Rapisarda was taken down inside the penalty area and Macalister Enderson converted the spot kick.

Concordia's best chance to get to within one goal came with under 15 minutes to play in the second half. Jannick Bettels lofted a serving pass into the box where defender Brett Wegleitner ran onto the ball and flicked it with his head over the goalie and towards the far post. UST goalie Mitchell Wolff quickly recovered and then dove headlong towards the back post where he was able to swat the ball away from the net just before it crossed the goal line.

St. Thomas added a third goal in the final 10 minutes of play after Concordia had pushed more players into attack and were caught on an odd-man counterattack.

Concordia was outshot 13-8 in total shots for the game and 9-3 in shots on goal. The Tommies also held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Cobbers will not hit the road for five consecutive away games. CC will start their extended road trip when they play at St. Mary's on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m.
