Third-Period Magic Runs Out In Series Finale At Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (11/09/24)---There would be no more third-period magic for Concordia in its series finale at Augsburg.

The Cobbers claimed wins in their first three game of the year by scoring multiple goals in the final period but on Saturday they were held scoreless in third and lost 3-2 to the Auggies.

The two teams were deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the final 20 minutes of play and Augsburg was able to score the game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation to earn the 1-goal win.

The loss is the first of the season for Concordia, who is now 3-1 in all games and 1-1 in league play. The Auggies even both of their marks at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC.

The teams traded leads in the first and second periods of play. Augsburg used Concordia's playbook from Friday by scoring in the first minute of play. The opening goal game at the 31-second mark and would give Augsburg a 1-0 lead – a lead that would last for 11 minutes.

The Cobbers tied the game at 11:50 when Blaise Miller netted his team-leading third goal of the year. Braden Costello and Cole Lehman were credited with the assists on the play. It would be Lehman's first of two helpers on the day.

Concordia took a 2-1 lead midway through the second frame when Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe scored an even-strength goal on an assist from Lehman. It was Henkemeyer-Howe's second strike of the season and he is now tied with Miller for the overall team lead in points at five.

The Cobbers were never able to finds their offensive rhythm in the third period and then lost the game at the 19:06 mark.

Concordia was outshot 30-27 in the game with Hunter Olson coming away with a game-high five shots on goal.

Dane Couture got his fourth straight start in goal and made 27 saves. Couture continues to lead the MIAC in goals against average with a 1.76 mark. He is also second in save percentage 93.7%.

Neither team scored on the power play for the second straight game. The Cobbers went 0-for-2 on Saturday and 0-for-5 on the weekend, while the Auggies were 0-for-1 in Game 2 and 0-for-4 for the series.

Concordia will host its home opener next weekend when they face Wis.-Eau Claire on Friday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m.
