7-Seconds Away From Unbeaten Opening Weekend

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/30/21)---Concordia was 7-seconds away from opening their first weekend on a 2-game unbeaten streak but conceded a goal at the end of the overtime period and lost 3-2 to Marian.

The Cobbers, who beat the Sabres 4-1 on Friday, broke to a 2-0 lead just before the midway point of the third period, but had Marian score two goals in 5:52 to tie the game and force the extra period.

Concordia scored the only goal of the first 40 minutes at the 11:13 mark of the first period when Kevin Ness scored his first goal of the year, and second of his career, on an assist from senior defenseman Alex Stoley.

Cobber sophomore goalie Aaron Dickstein, who was making his first collegiate start, made the 1-goal lead stand up through two periods of play. Dickstein stopped a couple of breakaway attempts and stoned the Sabres from in clos on several occasions. He stopped all 21 shots he faced in the first 40 minutes of play.

The game got pushed into overdrive at the 8:35 mark of the third period. There was a scuffle – and three players got sent to the penalty box. Concordia was given the extra minor penalty and was forced to play shorthanded for the next two minutes.

The Cobbers turned the disadvantage into an advantage when senior All-American Tyler Bossert netted a shorthanded just 10-seconds into the penalty kill.

Marian was able to grab the momentum back when they scored on the same power play, just 22-seconds later.

The game-tying goal came at the 14:57 mark and sent the game into overtime.

Concordia held the better of the play in the overtime session but couldn't get the game winner. CC outshot the Sabres 5-1 in the OT period. The only shot for Marian proved to be the game winner when the contest looked to be headed to a 2-2 tie. The Sabres scored at 4:53 of OT to gain a split in the 2-game series.

Dickstein finished the game with 35 saves.

The Cobbers were outshot 38-29 in the 64:53 of action. Marian scored the only power play goal of the weekend as they went 1-for-5 on the man advantage. CC was 0-for-3 in the game.

Bossert had a team-high six shots, while fellow senior Parker Simonson added four.

UP NEXT: Concordia will stay at home in the early part of the season and host Wis.-River Falls in a 2-game series on Nov. 5-6 at the Moorhead Sports Center. The Falcons are 2-0 on the year after sweeping Finlandia last weekend.
