Cobbers Can't Hold On To Leads, Fall To Comets

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/01/24)---Concordia had multiple-point leads in each of its first two sets against Mayville State, but was unable to sustain the momentum and lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-19) to the Comets in the only home non-conference match of the season.

The Cobbers held the lead on four different occasions to start the opener and took an 11-8 lead on a service ace from Cayla Sailer. That's when the tables turned on the Cobbers and they had to chase set for the last part of the bout. Mayville rattled off six straight points to take a 14-11 lead and then finished off the set by claiming four of the final six points.

Concordia pulled away from the Comets by an even wider margin in the second set before Mayville rallied to post an identical 25-21 win. The Cobbers led 12-5 on a kill from Jordyn Johnson and then MSU slowly started to chip away at the lead. They closed the gap to 16-13 before CC took a 5-point advantage at 20-15. Mayville closed out the set and took total control of the match by going on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 21-21. The Comets kept that streak going by winning the final four points as well.

The Cobbers hit .072 and had 34 kills in the game, while Mayville hit .114 and had 39 winners.

Mallory Leitner had a team-high 11 kills. Johnson finished with a career-high nine winners and had two blocks.

Maria Watt came away with a match-high three blocks, while Anna Knain had 30 assists and Sailer added 14 digs.

Concordia will play in St. Paul on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they face Hamline at 7 p.m.
