Cobbers Turn Up The Heat In 2024 Opener

OWATONNA, Minn. (2/03/24)---The outside temperatures matched the play of the Cobbers in their 2024 opener against Crown.

It was 45 degrees outside the Owatonna Tennis Center on Feb. 3 and Concordia turned up the heat even further against the Polars. The Cobbers didn't lose a game in doubles play and only dropped four games in singles competition.

Concordia showed promise in its four fall matches and then delivered in the first match of 2024 as they beat the Polars for the fourth straight time since 2019.

First-year head coach Jenna Forknell had four returners in the lineup that produced its first 9-0 win since the beginning of last season.

Senior Raquel Egge teamed with junior Erin Borchard to roll to a 9-0 win at No.1 doubles. Egge and Borchard only played two doubles matches together last season but could be a force for CC in 2024.

Anna Hacker and Lizzie Allan played the most doubles matches together in 2023 and it showed in the spring opener. They cruised to an 8-0 at No.2 doubles.

The Cobbers sent out the all first-year duo of Annalise Skrade and Ava Lowman at No.3 dubs and they responded with the third 8-0 win.

Junior Mary Skorich joined the action in singles play and came through with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No.1 spot.

Hacker (No.2), Allan (No.4) and first-year player Bell Hamre (No.6) all recorded double bagel wins in singles play.

Borchard and Skrade finished off the singles wins. Borchard earned a 6-1, 6-0 at No.3 singles and Skrade was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No.5 singles.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have little time to enjoy the season-opening win as they square off with cross-town rival MSU Moorhead on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 12 p.m. The Cobbers will be looking to get even with the Dragons after MSUM edged CC 6-3 in the fall.
