Setback Saturday Turns Into Win-Streak Sunday
FARGO, N.D. (3/27/22)---Concordia's 3-match weekend started in heart break, but ended with a winning streak. The Cobbers dropped a "I can't believe that just happened" 5-4 decision on Saturday against Northwestern (Minn.), and then rebounded with identical 8-1 victories over Minn.-Morris and Hamline on Sunday.
The win over Hamline was the first MIAC victory of the year for Cobbers who are now 6-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Junior Raquel Egge and first-year player Mary Skorich led Concordia over the weekend. The duo went 3-0 as the No.1 doubles team and both players went 3-0 in singles play.
The loss to Northwestern featured numerous match points for the Cobbers that could have given CC the 5-4 win. It also had a pair of losses in the tie-breaker in doubles play and a loss in the super-set in singles play.
Egge and Skorich finished their match at No.1 doubles first as they rolled to an 8-2 win. The No.2 and No.3 doubles bouts both went to the tie-breaker, and CC lost both 7-5. Emily Savageau and Anna Hacker fell at No.2 doubles and Taylor Partington and Abby Westrum dropped the tie-breaker score line at No.3 doubles.
Hacker joined Egge and Skorich to give the Cobbers a trio of singles wins. Hacker won 6-2, 6-4 at No.4 singles. Egge was a 6-3, 6-1 victor at No.1 singles and Skorich went straight sets (6-2, 6-4) at No.3 singles.
Freshman Lizzie Allan won the first set 6-2 in her bout at No.5 singles, but then lost 6-4 in the second and fell 11-9 in the super-set. Allan had several chances to earn the win in the super-set but couldn't come up with the key point. Erin Borchard was up 5-1 in her match at No.6 singles, but then lost 7-5 in the first set and 6-2 in set No.2.
Concordia overcame the tough loss on Saturday, by rolling to a pair of convincing wins on Sunday. The Cobbers didn't lose a doubles' match against Morris or Hamline. They also didn't have any of their 10 singles' victories go to the super-set.
Egge won 6-0, 6-1 in the morning match against Morris. She then recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Hamline. The three singles wins for Egge gives her five in her last nine bouts. She is now 6-9 on the year.
Skorich claimed straight-set wins in both matches and leads the team with eight singles victories. She is now 8-7 on the year and has won four straight matches.
Borchard rebounded from the loss on Saturday to post a pair of straight-set wins on Sunday. She is now 7-2 on the season at the No.6 singles spot.
