Cobbers Fall To Dragons In Return To Action In Fargo

FARGO, N.D. (03/12/22)---Concordia got to play at Courts Plus for the first time in 28 days as they battled NCAA Division II opponent MSU Moorhead on Saturday. The Cobbers picked up a win in each of doubles and singles play and fell 6-1 to the Dragons in a match played by DII scoring rules.

The loss continues Concordia's season-long theme of streaks. CC opened the season with three defeats, then rattled off four straight wins, before dropping three straight. The Cobbers are now 4-6 on the season.   

The Cobbers' lone doubles win came from the tandem of Abby Westrum and Taylor Partington who posted a 6-1 win at No.3 doubles. The victory was the team-leading fifth of the year for Westrum and Partington who are now 5-3 on the season.

The DII scoring rules give a single team point to the squad that wins more doubles matches. That team point would come down to the No.1 doubles match where the Cobber team of Raquel Egge and Anna Hacker battled back-and-forth before dropped a nail-biting 6-4 decision.

Concordia trailed 1-0 after the doubles matches, and would get their lone team point on the day from first-year player Erin Borchard. Borchard won her match at No.6 singles in straight sets. She came up with one more break in the opening set and won 7-5. She then used that momentum to roll to a 6-1 victory in the second set. The victory was Borchard's fourth of the year. She is tied for the team lead in singles wins, and her 4-1 overall record is the tops for any CC player.

The other close call for the Cobbers in singles play came in the No.1 match. Egge couldn't come up with a late break in either set and lost 7-5, 6-4 in a tightly contested match that featured multiple momentum changes.
