FARGO, N.D. (02/12/22)---Concordia started the 2022 season by hosting Macalester at Courts Plus in Fargo. Senior Abby Westrum led the Cobbers as she picked up wins in doubles and singles play, but it wasn't enough as Concordia dropped a 6-3 decision to the Scots.

The 6-3 loss is a big improvement over last season when the Cobbers fell 9-0 to Macalester in the Twin Cities.

Westrum, who was 0-1 in singles and 0-3 in doubles play last year, made a bid for Most Improved Player of the Year by starting the season with two wins.

Westrum teamed with fellow Taylor Partington to claim an 8-6 victory at No.3 doubles. She then followed that up with an impressive 6-4, 6-1 win at No.6 singles.

The other victory for the Cobbers on opening day came from first-year player Lizzie Allan at No.5 singles. Allan cruised to an easy 6-0 win in the first set of her first collegiate singles match. She then lost 6-2 in the second set, before regaining her form and recording a 10-5 decision in the super-set tie-breaker.

A second Cobber fist-year player almost recorded a win in her first college singles match. Mary Skorich won the first set at No.4 singles 6-1, but then lost 7-5 in a back-and-forth second set. Skorich fell 10-5 in the super set.

The other tight doubles match for Concordia came from the No.1 tandem of Raquel Egge and Anna Hacker. The pair battled the entire match, but had their serve broken in the end and lost 8-5.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers will stay at home for their first non-conference match of the season. CC will host Northwestern (Minn.) on Friday, Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Courts Plus in Fargo.
