Song Remains The Same In Shutout Win At Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/27/23)---Led Zeppelin would be proud of the Cobbers as they continue to use the band's 1976 film title "The Song Remains The Same" as a motto for the 2023 season.

For the second straight conference game, Concordia used an early goal and a lock-down defense to post a 1-0 victory. Senior Sophia Robinson scored in the sixth minute of play, and the Cobbers' "no goal patrol" held Hamline without a single shot on net in the 1-goal win over the Pipers.

Senior goalie Bre Nelson continues to be the band leader for the recurring defensive theme. Nelson poster her fourth shutout of the season and hasn't been scored on in 360 minutes of play this season.

The win is the third in a row for Concordia and improves their conference mark to 2-1-0. The six league points has CC tied for fifth in the league standings. CC is now 4-3-1 in all games.

THE 411: On Saturday, the Cobbers got a goal from Emma Sheflo in the 10th minute of play to beat Macalester 1-0. On Wednesday, it was Robinson's time to step forward on offense. She ran on to Ella Shinn's service from the right wing, settled the ball as she entered the penalty area and then 1-timed a shot that found the lower right corner of the net.

The goal at 5:38 was Robinson's third of the year and second game-winning strike of the season.

The teams would battle back-and-forth for the final 35 minutes of the first half before the Cobbers had 1-way traffic in the second period. Concordia outshot the Pipers 11-1 in total shots in the second half and had several quality chances to extend the lead.

The Concordia defense ensured that the one goal was plenty for the win. They only allowed five total shots in the game and didn't concede a shot on goal.

THE NEXT LEVEL: The defense continues to be the strength of CC in 2023. The 0 shots on goal against the Pipers marked the first time since 2019 that Concordia hasn't allowed a shot on goal. It's the first time since 2012 that the Cobbers have held a conference opponent without a shot on goal.

THE NEXT LEVEL 2.0: Concordia has posted five shutouts on the season and has a goals against average of 0.62. That mark is third lowest in the MIAC this season. How does that compare to last season? CC had a GAA of 1.53 in 2022. The school record for the lowest GAA in a season is 0.55, which was posted in 2006 when the Cobbers won the MIAC regular season and tournament titles.

THE NEXT LEVEL 3.0: It goes without saying that Nelson leads the MIAC in goals against average. Her 0.00 is ahead of the St. Kate's goalie, who has a 0.40 GAA. Nelson is one of nine goalies in NCAA Division III who hasn't allowed a goal this season.

INDIVIDUALLY SPEAKING: Robinson led all players with five total shots and three shots on goal. Chloe Sollom had three total shots and two were on frame. Kylee James came off the bench to post two total shots and one on goal.
