9-Second Surprise

9-Second Surprise

WINONA, Minn.  (10/01/16)—Emily Payne's goal with only 9-seconds remaining in the second overtime gave Concordia an improbable 1-0 win over St. Mary's in Winona.

The game looked like it was headed for a 0-0 tie until Payne was able to take advantage of a Cardinal defensive miscue just outside the goal. Payne jumped on a loose ball one-yard out from goal and headed it into the net for the game winner.

The goal gave the Cobbers their first conference victory of the year and first victory on the road in 2016. CC is now 2-5-3 in all games and 1-3-1 in the MIAC.

Concordia had the better of the Cardinals on the stat sheet as well as the scoreboard. The Cobbers held a 17-11 advantage in total shots and a 10-5 edge in shots on goal.

While the teams combined for 28 total shots and 15 shots on goal it was the goalies who kept the game at a 0-0 draw for 109:51. Concordia goalie Maddy Reed wound up stopping all five shots she faced to earn her fourth shutout of the season.

The Cobbers had eight different players credited with a shot and seven had a shot on goal. Payne and Alexandra Jones both had a team-high four total shots. Payne had three shots on goal while Jones had a pair of shots find the goal.

A PAYNE FOR OPPOSING DEFENSES: Emily Payne hadn't scored a goal in her college career in her freshman, sophomore or junior seasons and then for six games of her senior year. The streak reached 33 games and then she found the back of the net against Minn.-Morris. With dam finally burst, Payne has now scored three goals in the last four games and is tied for the team lead in goals scored this year.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will stay on the road for a non-conference game at Northwestern (Minn.) on Monday, Oct. 3. The Cobbers will then host the annual Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. against Carleton.
