Late Goal Spoils Quest For 3 Straight

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/24/16)—A third straight positive result appeared in the offering as Concordia appeared to be headed to overtime at St. Olaf. Unfortunately the Cobbers conceded a goal with 83-seconds left to play in the second half and never got their chance in extra time.

The loss snapped a two-game unbeaten streak for Concordia and drops their overall record to 1-4-3 on the year. CC is now 0-2-1 in league play. The Oles win for the second straight game and third in the last four. They are now 5-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the MIAC.

The game was a conundrum on the stat page. Concordia had more shots in the first half but allowed the only goal and then St. Olaf had more shots in the second half but conceded the only goal of the half until the fateful 88:37 mark.

St. Olaf took broke on top first with a goal at 12:31. It would be their only shot of the period. That score would stand up until the second half despite the Cobbers outshooting the Oles 5-1 in the first 45 minutes of play.

Concordia equalized in the 61st minute of play when senior defender Carly Mickelson scored her first collegiate goal. Mickelson headed home a corner kick cross from Paige McCullough at the 60:39 mark. Mickelson met the ball 12 yards out from goal and snapped the ball into the top part of the goal.

St. Olaf went on the attack after the game-tying goal and put up seven shots before scoring the game winner off of a corner kick.

St. Olaf heled a 9-8 edge in total shots for the game with both teams getting four shots on goal. McCullough led CC with four shots in the game while junior midfielder Alexandra Jones had a team-high two shots on goal.

Cobber goalie Maddy Reed made two saves on the day.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a big conference game on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when they host No.10-ranked St. Thomas at 4 p.m. The Cobbers will then head to Winona to take on St. Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
