A Rare Regular-Season Win At Carleton

A Rare Regular-Season Win At Carleton

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/10/15)--- Concordia scored two goals in a span of 2:29 in the second half to overcome a 1-0 deficit and keep their playoff hopes intact.

The Cobbers got another head goal off of a corner kick from Sadie Hayes and then a tap-in rebound goal from fellow senior Morgan Holm to pull off the come-from-behind win.

Concordia has now won three straight games and is 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC. The nine points in league play puts CC in a tie four-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings. The Knights have an identical 3-3 mark in the MIAC and are now 5-6-1 overall.

The win went against the flow of play and it also ended a streak in Northfield where the Cobbers have always struggled on the wider field. Concordia was outshot 11-6 in the game and the victory was the first in a regular-season game Carleton since 2007.

Carleton got on the board midway through the first half when they scored on a corner kick. The serve found its way towards the CC goal line where a Knight attacker knocked the ball home.

Concordia would have to wait until the ninth minute of the second half to come up with its own corner-kick goal. Hayes has made a living off of corner kicks in the past three games. Hayes rose up to meet the serve from Paige McCullough and headed home her third goal in as many games. The Cobbers have now scored six goals on corner kicks this season. CC did not have a single corner kick goal in all of 2014.

The assist was McCullough's team-leading fifth of the season.

The game-winning goal came 2:29 later at the 55:48 mark when Emily Wendorff hammered a shot from the left side of the penalty area. The Knight goalie was able to get a hand on the initial shot but the rebound caromed right into the path of Holm who calmly tapped home the ball.

The goal was Holm's fourth of the season. She now nine points on the year after having a combined 11 points in her previous three seasons at Concordia.

Wendorff now has a team-leading 14 points on the year.

Carleton would press for the equalizer but could never get a shot past Cobber goalie Elizabeth Bitzan. The Knights had six shots in the final 30 minutes of play but Bitzan came up with the two saves on the only shots on goal to preserve the win.

Bitzan made four saves in the game to earn her seventh win of the season.

Holm and Wendorff led the Cobber offense with two shots on goal.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will continue with their two-game road trip when they play at Augsburg on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m.
