Wendorff Works Up Win Over Gustavus

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/21/13)—A pair of first-half goals by freshman Emily Wendorff catapulted Concordia to a 2-0 win over Gustavus on Saturday. The victory keeps the Cobbers perfect in MIAC play as they move to 2-0. CC is 5-2 overall.

For the second straight game Concordia held a decided edge in shots on goal. The Cobbers outshot the Gusties 21-2 in overall shots and 14-2 in shots on goal. CC has now outshot its opponents 53-9 in the last two games – which were also the start of MIAC play.

Wendorff doubled her season goal output with her tallies in the first half. She got the Cobbers on the board early when she scored at the 4-minute mark. Wendorff was able to get loose to fire a shot off the far post from the corner of the Gustie penalty area. Her well-paced shot caromed off the post and rolled into the net.

Her second score off a crossing play. She found herself free in front of the goal and knocked the ball into the back of the net after Elizabeth Robinson and Gina Weiss set up the play. The goal at 32:00 was her fourth of the season. She is now second on the team in goals and second in points (8).

Concordia controlled much of the second half and had a three-shot spree in a span of 1:30 less than 10 minutes into the final period which could have put the game out of reach. CC wound up with a 9-1 margin in shots for the second 45 minutes.

Cobber goalie Elizabeth Bitzan turned aside both shots she faced. She earned her second straight shutout and fourth of the season. She also lowered her season goals against average to 0.71. Gustavus goalie Caroline Olson made several key stops in the game and finished with 11 saves in the 90 minutes of play.

Concordia will continue with conference play when they face St. Thomas in St. Paul on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
