Bisek Continues To Impress, Paces Cobbers At Augsburg Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (11/20/21)---Ty Bisek continues to impress in his freshman season. On Wednesday he out battled an All-American and helped Concordia beat Division II MSU Moorhead, and then on Saturday he won the 133-lb weight class in the freshman division of the Auggie Invite.

Bisek's first-place performance led the Cobbers in a meet where CC produced a trio of Top 3 finishes and eight different Top 5 place winners.

Bisek won three matches on his way to the title at 133 in the freshman division. He now has a team-leading eight wins on the season and is 8-1 overall. His only loss is to a redshirt senior All-American from St. Cloud State.

Bisek opened his title run by scoring a pin at the 3:43 mark. He then followed that up by beating a pair of wrestlers from perennial DII power Augsburg. Bisek scored a 7-0 decision over Carson Murray in the semifinals and then outfought Austin Gabbert to score a 5-2 decision in the championship match.

Senior Jacob Prunty was the top place winner in the gold division for the Cobbers. He went 3-1 in the 141-lb weight class and finished second.

Prunty started his day with an 11-0 major decision. He then advanced to the semifinals because of a medical forfeit. Prunty then edged Luke Peterson of DII Southwest MN State 5-4 to advance to the championship bout. Prunty lost a 9-2 decision to Connor Manderfeld from Upper Iowa.

Bisek has company in finding success in his freshman season. Like Bisek, David Platt has strung together multiple wins at invitationals and back-to-back podium finishes. On Saturday Platt went 3-1 and finished second at 149 in the freshman division.

Not only did Platt put up three wins on the day, he posted three wins by pin – and all came before the 4-minute mark. Platt got out of his first match in 1:29 and then posted a pin in 3:55 in the quarterfinal bout. He recorded a pin at 2:26 in the semifinals before losing a high-octane 13-12 decision in the championship match.

Kellen Schauer, Kaden Spindler and Cole Kubesh put up the other Top 5 finishes for the Cobbers in the gold division.

Schauer went 2-2 at 149 and finished fourth. He was 2-2 and posted back-to-back bonus point wins in his first two matches. Schauer opened with a 10-2 major decision and then posted a pin at 6:05 in the quarterfinals. He then ran into some tough luck as he lost his next two matches by identical 5-3 decisions. His loss in the third-place match happened in the first sudden victory session.                 

Spindler also opened his tournament with two wins, then lost a pair and finished in fourth place. He claimed a 7-6 win in the opener at 174 and then advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2 win over Nolan Paar from Wis.-La Crosse. Spindler then lost twice to finish in the No.4 spot.

Kubesh went 1-2 and placed fifth at 125. His win on the day was a pin at the 1:00 mark over Dakota Henry from Upper Iowa. The win was a reversal from his opening match at the invite where he fell 7-6 to Henry.

Danny Monatukwa and Connor Chloupek rounded out the eight Top 5 finishes for the Cobbers. Monatukwa went 3-1 and finished fifth at 133 in the freshman division. He had the hard luck of dropping his opener, but then ran the table with three straight wins to pick up the first Top 5 finish of his collegiate career.

Chloupek went 2-2 in the 184-lb weight class in the freshman division and placed fourth. He won his first two matches by a pin and major decision before dropping a pair of decisions in the semifinal and third-place match.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have a break for the Thanksgiving holiday and then return to action on Thursday, Dec. 2 when they host the University of Mary in a dual meet at 7 p.m.
