MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/03/25)---Concordia went back and forth with No.2-ranked Wis.-River Falls for the first 45 minutes of the series opener before the Falcons were able to come up with three unanswered goals and send the Cobbers to a 4-1 defeat.
The game started out perfectly for Concordia (1-8-0) as first-year forward Madilyn Skogman gave CC a lead in the fourth minute of the opening period of play. She took the puck off the stick of one of the Falcons' defenders right in front of the UWRF goal and slammed home her own rebound after the Falcons goalie made the save on Skogman's initial shot.
The strike at the 3:12 mark gave the Cobbers an early 1-0 lead and was Skogman's second goal of the season.
River Falls (8-2-2) tied the game midway through the first period and that set the stage for 34 minutes of scoreless hockey with each team getting chances in front of goal but neither could come up with the tie-breaking tally.
The Falcons were finally able to break through at 5:50 of the final period. The eventual game-winning goal was the start of three straight markers in a span of 9:37.
Concordia was outshot 46-21 for the game with Anna Nelson posting a team-high four shots on goal.
Cobber senior goalie Ashlea Arvidson was stellar in goal for the full 60 minutes and turned aside 42 shots. The 42 saves are a season high for Arvidson.
Concordia will look for a split in the series when they square off against nationally-ranked UWRF on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 1:30 p.m.
