Late-Game Comeback Falls Short In Series Opener
SUPERIOR, Wis. (12/13/24)---Concordia staged a late third-period comeback in its series opener at Wis.-Superior but it came up one goal short as the Cobbers fell 2-1.
The Yellowjackets scored a single goal in both the first and second periods before Concordia was able to get on the board in the last six minutes of the final frame. CC pushed for the game-tying goal in the final stretch and had three shots on goal but couldn't post the equalizer on the board.
The loss sends the Cobbers' record to 1-6-0 on the year. Superior ends its 4-game winless streak and moves to 5-6-2 for the season.
The opening goal of the game came midway through the first period. Superior was able to hold the puck in the Concordia zone for an extended period of time which led to the puck getting passed back to the left point. The Yellowjacket defensive player wound up and sent a shot through the maze of players in front of the goal and into the top part of the net.
The eventual game-winning goal was scored in the final minute of the middle period. The strike came after a pass from the UWS defensive zone sprung free a forward on the left wing. She was able to carry the puck into the CC zone and snapped home the winner from the left faceoff circle.
Concordia pressed to get on the board at the start of the third period and was finally rewarded at the 14:45 mark when Abbey Reule scored on the power play.
The Cobbers were staked to the PP when a Superior player took a roughing penalty at 14:37. Head Coach Jason Gregoire took a timeout to set up the power play and paid off as Concordia senior Jerica Friese was able to win the draw and get it to Taylyn Cope on the near boards. Cope made a cross-ice pass to Abbey Hardwick on the left point who let go a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle. Hardwick's shot was stopped by the Yellowjackets' goalie but the rebound went right to Abbey Reule who was standing on the right side of the crease. Reule knocked home the rebound to get CC within a goal at 2-1.
The goal was Reule's third in the last two games. Cope and Hardwick were given the assists on the play.
The goal gave the Cobbers the momentum for the final five minutes and they were able to create three scoring chances which were stopped by the UWS netminder.
Concordia outshot Superior in all three periods and finished with a 29-21 advantage in shots on goal. Reule led CC with five shots and Morgan Sauvageau added four.
Senior goalie Ashlea Arvidson turned aside 19 shots in her sixth start of the season.
Concordia will finish off the 2024 slate of games when they complete the 2-game series at Wis.-Superior on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m.
