BLAINE, Minn. (02/13/22)---The professors at Concordia might have to forgive the Cobbers if they want to stay in Blaine and spend the rest of the season playing at the National Sports Center.

Concordia used a power play goal in the back half of the third period to beat Bethel 2-1 and earn a sweep of the 2-game series.

It is the first conference sweep for the Cobbers this season and first MIAC road sweep for Concordia since the start of the 2018-19 season. It is also the first sweep by CC over the Royals since the 2008 season.

The two wins come at the perfect time for Concordia as they try and secure a higher playoff position, and home ice advantage in the opening round of the conference tournament.

The Cobbers are now 8-12-1 overall and 4-9-1 in the MIAC. They are currently in eighth place in the league standings with one week left in the regular season. If the season ended today, Concordia would host St. Catherine on Wednesday, Feb. 23 in the first round of the MIAC playoffs.

All three goals in the series finale came on the power play. Concordia entered Sunday having not scored on the power play in four straight games – and in 14 straight PP situations.

Concordia opened the scoring when junior defenseman Grace Doerring netted her second goal in four games at the 6:21 mark of the second period. Josie Hell and McKenzie Oelkers were credited with the assists on the first goal of the game.

Bethel would tie the game on its third power play situation of the game. The Royals leveled the score at 1-1 with a marker at the 17:36 mark of the middle period.

The game would stay deadlocked until the final 7-minutes of regulation. The Cobbers were staked to their third player-advantage situation of the game when the Royals were whistled for a checking violation at 12:46.

Concordia needed a full minute with the extra skater before securing the game-winning strike. Sophomore Jerica Friese earned the win for CC when she finished off a play from Jordie Egerdahl and Allison O'Kane at 13:47.

The goal was Friese's team-leading 14th of the season and it was her second game-winning goal of the season. Friese's 14 goals are third most in the MIAC this year.

Junior goalie Kiana Flaig got the start in goal for the second straight game in the series and was on point throughout the game. She turned aside 29 shots to pick up her sixth win of the year.

Concordia held a 39-30 advantage in shots on goal for the game. Hardwick led all players with six shots on goal.

UP NEXT: Concordia will return to Moorhead for their final series of the regular season. The Cobbers will host Hamline on Feb. 18-19. Both games will be at the Moorhead Sports Center.
