Cobbers Make A Sunday Statement

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (9/09/12)—Concordia put a bow on their annual Cobber golf tournament weekend by finishing third at the two-day Concordia Invite at Wildflower GC in Detroit Lakes which featured 11 different teams and over 80 individual golfers.

The Cobbers posted the highest finish of any NCAA Division III team at the meet.  CC also went lower than the five other MIAC teams in the meet.

Concordia claimed their third-place finish by improving 26 shots from Saturday to Sunday. The Cobbers fired a team total of 366 in the wind-swept opening round on Saturday but then rebounded to card a 340 on Sunday. CC entered the final day in a tie for fourth place but then bettered Minot State and St. Ben's by seven shots to climb over the Beavers and Blazers and into third place.

The Cobbers used the "pack" mentality to come away with the top 3 finish. The top four golfers were all within eight shots of one another. Sophomore Molly Zavadil was the lowest Concordia golfer. She shot a consistent two-day total of 173 (87-86) and placed in a tie for the 10th spot.

Kristi Opatz was five shots better on Sunday and came home in 175 (90-85) to share 16th place while Amy Mireault made the biggest improvement of any golfer in the top 30 as she improved by 17 shots from day 1 to day 2 and captured 18th place with a 177 (97-80). Katie Nelson rounded out the CC top 4 as she recorded a total of 181 (92-89) and finished in a tie for 27th place.

The Cobbers will continue their 2012 fall season when they compete in the DIII Midwest Classic on Sept. 15-16 at the Jewel GC in Lake City.
