Simple Math Goes Against Cobbers In Winona

WINONA, Minn. (02/12/22)---It doesn't take a mathematician with an advanced degree to figure out that when one team makes 12 more 3-pointers than the other, that team will usually win.

That simple math equation came into play in Winona as Concordia was outshot 15-3 in shots from outside the arc at St. Mary's and lost 71-54.

The Cardinals made nine 3-pointers in the first half, knocked down at least a trio of shots from distance in each quarter and came away with the win on the final Saturday in the regular season. The 15 made 3-pointers is a single game program record for St. Mary's who ended up shooting 51.7% (15-for-29) from beyond the arc.

The 15 successful 3-pointers is the most against the Cobbers since Gustavus also made 15 shots from distance in December of 2019.

Concordia (7-13, 7-11 MIAC) led briefly at 4-3, but then St. Mary's connected on five 3-pointers to end the first quarter and raced to a 20-11 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. SMU then hit on four triples in the second quarter and led by 11 at 38-27 at the half.

The game got away from the Cobbers at the start of the second half when SMU scored the first 12 points of the quarter and expanded the lead to 23 points.

The Cobbers shot 41.7% (20-for-48) from the field and 25.0% (3-for-12) from 3-point range in the game. CC went 11-for-18 (61.1%) from the foul stripe.

St. Mary's (8-15, 7-13 MIAC) was colder from the rest of the floor than from distance. The Cardinals ended the game by shooting 41.7% (25-for-60) from the field.

Once again, simple math states that SMU made more shots from outside the arc than they did from inside the arc. The Cardinals were also 6-for-9 from the free throw line.

Not surprisingly, Concordia held the edge in points around the basket. CC outscored SMU 24-18 in points in the paint.

The Cobbers had three players score at least 10 points in the game. Mary Sem had a team-high 12 points, while Emily Beseman and Makayla Anderson both added 10. For Sem, it was the 14th time this season she has posted a double-digit point total.

Jennie Sem led the team with six rebounds.

UP NEXT: Concordia won't have to wait long to get math back on its side. The Cobbers will play at St. Scholastica on Monday, Feb. 14 to start the final week of the regular season.
