Cobbers Stumble Out Of The Gate In Loss At Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (01/12/22)--- When you're playing on the road against the top team in the league, the last thing you want to do is stumble out of the starting gate and have to chase the game for the entire 40 minutes. Unfortunately for Concordia, that is exactly what happed as they scored only six points in the first quarter and lost 63-44 to league-leading Augsburg.

The Cobbers were outscored 20-6 in the first 10 minutes of play as they fell for the first time in three games. The Auggies scored the first 10 points in the game and held a 15-2 advantage midway through the period. Concordia finished the first 10 minutes of play by going 3-for-15 from the field and 0-for-4 from outside the arc.

The six points scored by the Cobbers in the first quarter is the fewest they've posted in any period this season. The 44 overall points is also a low for the year.

The loss drops Concordia's overall record to 3-8 on the year. CC is 3-6 in league play. Augsburg ups its win streak to nine games, and is now 9-3 overall. The Auggies remain unbeaten in MIAC play at 9-0.

The Cobbers finished within five points of Augsburg in the final three quarters of the game. CC connected on 33.3% (3-for-9) of their attempts from distance in the final 30 minutes of play and forced 12 Auggie turnovers.

For the game, Concordia shot 32.7% (17-for-52) from the floor and 20.0% (3-for-15) from 3-point range. Augsburg connected on 43.4% (23-for-53) of their attempts from the field and 40.9% (9-for-22) of their shots from distance.

The Cobbers held the edge in both points around the basket, points off of turnovers and points from the bench. CC outscored Augsburg 26-22 in points in the paint, 19-3 in points from miscues and 21-3 in points scored from the reserves.

Concordia didn't have a player score more than six points in the game. Seniors Mary Sem and Autumn Thompson, and freshman Makayla Anderson, all had a half-dozen points in the game. Anderson led the team in rebounds with seven, while Sem had a pair of boards and Thompson added two assists.

UP NEXT: Concordia will return home and host St. Mary's on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. The Cardinals are 4-9 overall and 3-7 in league play. They dropped a 71-61 decision at home against St. Catherine on Wednesday.
