Upping Their Position At UND

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (2/22/20)--- Several Cobber athletes used the UND Tune-Up Meet in Grand Forks to improve their positioning for next week's MIAC Indoor Championship Meet.

The UND was a way for athletes from several schools to post better marks before conference championship meets.

Concordia had season bests in both track and field events and were led by senior Tom Whiting and junior Munir Isahak who both jumped into the Top 11 in the MIAC in events. Ben Schelske led the way for the field athletes as he posted a pair of conference Top 11 marks.

Whiting's break through season performance came in the 60-meter dash where he clocked a career-best 7.19 in the finals. Whiting qualified for the finals with a time if 7.28 and then bettered that mark by .09 of a second in the finals where he finished in fifth place.

Whiting's time is tied for the 11th best in the MIAC this year. He is within .04 of a second within the Top 7 of the conference.

Isahak has improved in each meet this indoor season. He capped the "regular season" by recording a career-best time in the mile. Isahak finished second at UND in a field of 16 with a time of 4:21.40. He was the only non-Division I athlete in the Top 5 of the race.

Iasahak's time pushes him into the Top 10 of the MIAC this year. He now owns the seventh fastest mark in the conference. Isahak is also 10th in the 1000 meters and 11th in the 800 meters.

Schelske had season-best marks in both the shot put and weight throw and is now in the Top 11 of the MIAC in both events. He recorded a distance of 45-10.75 in the shot put which is the seventh farthest in the conference this year and betters his old season best by almost two feet.

Schelske then unleashed a toss of 48-10.25 in the weight throw which is a season best by four inches and No.11 on the MIAC list this year.

Schelske's throw teammate Jake Steiner has lived in the Top 10 in the MIAC in both throw events all season long. While he didn't make a huge step up on Saturday, he did post a season-best distance in the shot put and moved closer to the Top 3 of the league. Steiner recorded a distance of 50-00.00 at UND which ups his previous season best of 49-07.75 by 2.25 inches.

Steiner is also eighth in the conference in the weight throw. He posted a season-best mark of 51-05.00 at the UND Indoor Meet on Jan. 30.

UP NEXT: Concordia will turn its attention to the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet. The Cobber mutli-event athletes will compete in the conference heptathlon on Thursday, Feb. 27 and Friday, Feb. 28 while the rest of the team will get into action on Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Feb. 29. CC finished in a tie for sixth place at last year's MIAC indoor meet.
