Acclimated Cobbers Split On Final Day In Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (3/07/24)---Concordia was finally able to get acclimated to the warm weather and Florida sunshine and split the final two matches on their annual spring training trip.

After playing three matches in less than 48 hours after they arrived in Florida, the Cobbers lost to Ursinus (Pa.) 7-2 and claimed their first win of the trip by blanking King's College (Pa.) 9-0.

CC finishes Florida with a 1-4 record and is 2-10 on the season.

Concordia trailed 2-1 after doubles play in the opening match of the day, and battled through several close singles matches and earned a lone win to bring the final score line to 7-2.    

The newly formed No.1 doubles team of Kai Pierce and Isaac Maddock claimed an 8-5 win to get the Cobbers off to a fast start. The pair were put together in Florida and would end up going 2-1 for the trip.

Logan Sandberg and Kai Kringlie recorded the closest other doubles match of the morning as they lost 8-3 at No.2 doubles.

Maddock was able to carry over the success from doubles play into his singles match at No.3 singles and won in the super-set tie-breaker. Maddock lost the opening set 7-5, but rebounded to cruise to a 6-1 victory in the second set. He never let his opponent gain any traction in the tie-breaker and rolled to a 10-5 win.

Pierce lost his match No.2 singles by a total of three games. He fell 7-6 (3) in the first set and then dropped a 6-4 decision in the second set.

The Cobbers were able to put it all together in the final match in Florida. They lost only one set in singles play and never let the Monarchs claim more than three games in doubles play.

Pierce and Maddock made it an undefeated Thursday by posting an 8-1 win at No.1 doubles.

Head Coach Nate Young mixed up the lineup and went with freshmen Daniel Skrade and Hunter Rice at No.2 doubles and Sean Martin and Max Ness at No.3 doubles. Skrade and Rice responded with an 8-3 win to claim their team-leading fourth doubles victory of the year. Playing their first doubles match of the year, Martin and Ness came through with an 8-2 win at No.3 doubles.

Sandberg was locked into the closest singles match against the King's men. He needed to go to the super-set before winning 4-6, 6-2, 10-3. He has four singles wins for the year.

Maddock went a perfect 4-0 on the final day of the spring trip when he claimed his team-leading fifth single win of the year. He posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No.3 singles.

Pierce, Kringlie, Rice and Alex Laho all won in straight sets to make it a clean sweep for the Cobbers. Laho's 6-1, 6-1 win at No.6 singles was his first collegiate victory.

UP NEXT: Concordia will return from Florida and have a week to prepare for an away/home conference doubleheader. The Cobbers will play at nationally-ranked Gustavus on Saturday, Mar. 16, and then return home to face St. Mary's on Sunday, Mar. 17 at Courts Plus in Fargo.
