Non-Conference Weekend Split

FARGO, N.D. (2/25/19)---Concordia hosted a pair of non-conference UMAC opponents and came away with a good news, bad news story line. The Cobbers dominated Crown 9-0 on Saturday but then fell 6-3 to St. Scholastica in a hard fought match on Sunday.

The split on the weekend pushes the Cobbers' season record to 2-3 on the year.

Concordia got the weekend started by only losing three total games in their 9-0 win over Crown. The Cobbers had two of the three doubles teams win by 8-0 scores and five of the six singles matches were decided by 6-0, 6-0 score lines.

First-year head coach Zach Zitur had the same lineup in both matches and Sunday's bout with the Saints proved to be a back-and-forth affair from the start of doubles play.

Concordia's No.1 doubles tandem of Erik Porter and Jared Saue battled to an 8-6 victory in one of the best matches of the weekend. The pair showed determination throughout the 14 games as they came away with their team-leading fourth doubles victory of the year. The top CC pairing is now 4-1 on the season.

The other two doubles matches could have gone either way but Concordia wound up losing both 8-6 and trailed 2-1 in the team score heading into singles play.

The Cobbers got their other two team points at the No.4 and No.5 singles positions. Freshman Tanner Lundberg improved his season singles record to 3-2 with a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 win at No.4 singles.

Junior Carter Steffes followed suit with a straight-set victory at No.5 singles. He claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win to also move to 3-2 in singles play on the season.

The other four singles matches were also settled in straight sets. The closest bout of those four came at No.6 singles where Jake Peters lost 6-4, 6-3.

UP NEXT: Concordia will return to conference play when they travel to St. Paul to take on Macalester on Friday, Mar. 1 at 6:30 p.m. The Scots are 5-0 on the season but will be playing their first MIAC match of the year on Friday. The bout with at Macalester is the start of the annual spring break trip for the Cobbers. Concordia will then travel to Florida and play five matches in the Orlando area from Mar. 3-7.
