Doubles Step Up Against Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (4/16/16)—Concordia finished up its final road trip of the year with a narrow loss at Division II opponent Augustana (S.D.). The Cobbers won two of three doubles matches but wound up losing 6-3 to the Vikings.

The match started in Concordia's favor as the No. 2 and No.3 doubles teams each earned an 8-3 victory. Zach Zitur and Matthew Engum combined for their fourth doubles win of the season at No.2 doubles. Jesse Schneeberger and Austin Storm then matched that victory at No.3 doubles to record their third win of the season.

The singles play was hotly contested with the Cobbers winning one match and two others going to the super-set tiebreaker.

Schneeberger completed his unbeaten Saturday by winning in straight sets at No.4 singles. He won 6-4 in the opening set and then closed out the match with a 6-4 win in the second set.

The two "swing" matches that were decided in the super-set tie-breaker came at No.1 and No.3 singles. Sophomore Isaac Toivonen got out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the first set 6-4 at No.1 singles. He dropped the second set and then lost 10-7 in the tie-breaker. Zitur cruised to a 6-0 win in the first set and went back-and-forth in the second set before finally falling 7-5. He then lost in the final points in the super-set tie-breaker 10-8.

FINISHING WITH A FLURRY
 The doubles team of Zach Zitur and Matthew Engum recorded their third win of the season which is tied for the team lead. They have now won two of their last three doubles bouts of the year.

STREAK SNAPPER
 Jesse Schneeberger's win at No.4 singles snapped an eight-match singles losing skid. Schneeberger won his first two singles matches of the year but then went on the losing skid.     

WHAT'S NEXT
 Concordia will close out its 2016 season next weekend when they host Macalester on Sunday, Apr. 24 at 3 p.m. The match is schedule to be played outside at the tennis courts at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
